Havurot are our primary fellowship and interest groups. Committees are the groups that tackle the spiritual and physical work of maintaining community. You are invited to explore both!
Havurot at Makom
Havurah ( plural: havurot):group, fellowship . From the Hebrew root of the nouns meaning friend , study partner, and composition, and of the verbs meaning bind together and join.
Havurot help you connect to the community more deeply, to form friendships, and to spend time with people who share similar interests and life passages. To protect their close-knit nature, some havurot are closed or for members only, but we always have some openings, we are always open to starting new havurot and to audits and visits. The Meditation Havurah, because of its prayerful nature, is open to all, regardless of membership. Our newest havurot, Families and No’ar in particular, particularly welcome prospective members to their meetings.
Chai Lights,
Makom’s first Havurah, has been meeting for 15 years. Meetings are monthly, and we take turns leading, planning and hosting. One sure component of each meeting is food! Some events are devoted to a specific practice, such as our annual Tu Bishvat seder. We also have social events and a newsletter. We celebrate one another’s simchas, honoring milestones together. We are also committed to raising money for abused and neglected children in Israel. By-laws limit the havurah to 30 members , and we incorporate new members in January, so they can participate in the annual planning meeting. For more information, please contact Marilyn or Leonard Minkle at (818) 344-2811 or kidsfive@pacbell.net
Creative Arts Havurah meets on the third Wednesday of the month, and is led by artist and artisan Norma Garber. Please contact Norma at (818) 880-4911 or ng4evr8@sbcglobal.net
The Families Havurah is open to all families with children under 18. Members and prospective members are welcome! The havurah is new and seeking participants and input. Our vision is to give families a safe, fun, and comfortable Jewish place to meet outside of services. Most events include children and a few adults-only meetings are also planned. The activities are wide-ranging—from pool and pizza parties to Shabbat lunches to social justice projects to a parents’ night out. For more information, contact Mitzi Schwarz, (310) 614-0430 mitzismusic@yahoo.com < mailto:mitzismusic@yahoo.com> or Harold Gidish, (818) 224-4374 hgidish@aol.com < mailto:hgidish@aol.com> .
The Westside Couples Havurah meets regularly for both socializing and Jewish programming. About a third of Makom’s membership is on the Westside, and couples enjoy the fellowship with other Makomniks. There is a current opening for one or two new couples. Please contact Melanie Turner at (310) 479-1270 to learn more.
Havurat No’ar , Makom’s youth group, is underway! The congregation has a cadre of teenagers. After a “teen lounge” and food drive on High Holidays, we are planning a yahoo group, a pool party, field trips, and more social justice projects. For information and to participate, please contact Harold Gidish at (818) 224-4374 or hgidish@aol.com < mailto:hgidish@aol.com> .
The Meditation Havurah meets on the second Sunday after the first Friday of each month, from 10:30am-12:30pm. All are welcome! We practice sitting meditation, chanting, and walking meditation at a private home in Mandeville Canyon. We conclude with a healing circle, which prays for members of the Makom community and others who have requested healing prayers. Finally, we expand our prayer circle to include healing for all personal and social ills. For directions, to receive an e-mail reminder of dates, or to add a name to our healing list, please call Jennifer Weinstein at (310) 396-9763 or email her at fncyntr@earthlink.net.
In addition to Havurot, we also have Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah groups, community Torah classes, women’s Torah study, Gratitude Enrichment meetings and One People/One Book discussion groups.
To initiate a new havurah, committee, or another venture, please contact Harold Gidish at (818) 224-4374 or hgidish@aol.com < mailto:hgidish@aol.com>
Committees at Makom
Have you been wanting to get involved and be of service? Whether you have a lot of time or just a little, want to help with a one-time project or an ongoing task, we have a shidach for you!
Makom has a number of active, working committees that do the work to sustain and support our community.
Please contact the chair people below, if you are interested in helping or if you have suggestions or needs in the area of their expertise.

Makom Ohr Shalom is in need of "good men, and women"! You can volunteer for a specific task, to work alone or with others on a committee. We want to make it easy, pleasant and rewarding for you to serve our community. In particular, we are now looking for the following talents. If you have an idea you wish to bring forward, please don't hesitate to call!
Membership Mavens - Are you a "people person"? Do you love to greet, welcome, open your home and your heart? Would you like to help make phone calls, organize events or represent Makom at street fairs and festivals? Please contact Dana Stone Goldberg to join our very important Membership Committee at: shaynadana@hotmail.com or (818) 989-3410.
High
Holiday Holiness - So many members and friends of Makom love
our High Holiday services. All the individual elements are wonderful,
and there is something extraordinary about how those elements
come together at Makom Ohr Shalom on some of the holiest days
of the year. Please consider volunteering your time to help enhance
the service. You can assist with decorations or with set-up, staff
a ticket or membership table, make some phone calls from the comfort
of your home, or handle yahrzeit candles or handouts at the services
themselves. We have opportunities to get involved with choir,
Shofar Corps, and home hospitality for out-of-town guests. Is
there something you have always wished for at High Holiday services?
Perhaps you can help make it happen. To volunteer or inquire,
please contact Gail Duncan at gail.duncan@kodak.com
Grant Writers - Makom has leads on several wonderful
grant opportunities. If you have experience writing grants, we
want to hear from you! Please contact Harold Gidish to inquire
or to volunteer at: Hgidish@aol.com
or (818) 222-4374.
Don’t See Your Idea or Talent Here? – Please
contact Makom’s president, Harold Gidish, to share your
thoughts and volunteer energy. Harold can be reached at hgidish@aol.com.
Our community is deeply committed to tikkun olam– repairing the world through social justice and good works. We have ongoing programs to benefit abused children in Israel (through Orr Shalom) and to bring the joy and peace of Shabbat to people in nursing homes. We are members of Jewish World Watch, an organization dedicated to preventing and responding to genocide. We regularly support SOVA Food Pantry, both through food collection and through visits to help organize the pantry and distribute food. We also partner with Project Chicken Soup, Operation Gratitude, Project Angel Food, The National Council for Jewish Women, The Jewish Federation, The Family Violence Project, and our host Church, St. Paul’s for a variety of hands-on social justice projects.
If you are interested in helping with Jewish World Watch and Save Darfur activities, please contact Linda Kaufman at lindakaufman@mindspring.com.
If you are interested in collecting toys, clothing, and books for women and children in emergency shelters, please contact Naomi Drangle at tutjesse@earthlink.net.
