Makom Ohr Shalom's Religious School and Family Programs

The Makom Ohr Shalom Religious School meets once a week on Sundays from 10 am to 12:30 pm. It offers a creative learning experience in Judaic studies through music, art, games and discussion. We provide students with a grounding in prayer, Jewish holidays, Hebrew reading, Bible and Rabbinic literature. Lessons include the understanding of how prayer can help on a day to day basis, such as repeating the Shema and the Shehechianu prayers before exams and stressful or rewarding situations.

Our rabbi, cantor, and teachers help students identify how Torah relates to their own lives. Our goal is to impart not only information and skills, but also love of Judaism, God, Israel, and all people, everywhere. Religious School meets on Sundays during the school year. Please contact us regarding the upcoming 2007-2008 schedule.

Childcare

Children are always welcome in the main sanctuary. Every first and third Friday of the month, we provide childcare for all ages (children must be potty-trained) in a supervised room just outside the main service.

On High Holidays, childcare becomes High Holy care. Children enjoy their own celebration through art, song, a junior congregation, and teachings from our rabbis. A teen lounge is also provided without charge.

Community Shabbat Dinners

When there is a fifth Friday of the month, Makom sponsors a community Shabbat dinner. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Friday evening ritual around the dining table. We begin at 7:30 pm. Bring a brown-bag dinner and a willing heart; Makom will supply grape juice, wine, challah, dessert, and music. Together, we will welcome Shabbat. The whole family is invited! Kindly RSVP to (818) 725-7600, so we can confirm the location and set a place for you and your guests. We also have periodic community dinners on the first and third Fridays of the month. The next one will be January 18th.

No'ar (Teen Group)

No'ar is our youth group for post-Bar and Bat Mitzvah students. They socialize, tackle social justice projects, and enjoy youth Shabbatons. Please call to inquire and participate!

Music is a large part of the Makom experience and our children can participate in the Makom children's choir. Above our children's choir performs at the Jewish Home for the Aged Hannukah program.

Havdalah for Families

Periodically during the year, families of Makom members and the wider Jewish community get together to experience the ending-of-Shabbat ritual in the intimate setting of a private home. Songs, snacks, and shmoozing follow. Please call the Makom information line to RSVP or to inquire about future dates: (818) 725-7600.
