What To Expect on Shabbat

Makom Ohr Shalom services are unique, brimming with music, joy, spirit, and community. Our major services are on the first and third Fridays of each month, and we also have smaller, havurah-style services on the other Fridays, plus Family Services, Torah classes, nursing home visits, and occasional havdalah evenings on Saturdays. Most Shabbat programs and services are held in the Valley, and some are on the Westside. Our “dance card” is below.
If you are coming to Makom for the first time, you will probably want to attend a first or third Friday of the month service, initially. These services incorporate meditation, chanting, original and traditional melodies and even some dancing in the aisles. You don't have to be Hebrew literate to enjoy our Shabbat service. Our prayer book includes Hebrew, English and transliteration for every prayer. And, if the liturgy is unfamiliar, you're encouraged to hum along. All our services conclude with an oneg, featuring desserts, fellowship and informal schmoozing.
Make A Joyous Sound. It's Shabbat!

First Fridays: The first Friday of each
month is EnCHANTing Shabbat, which
includes prayer, music, meditation, and, of
course, chanting of the Torah. Inspired by
Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi
Debra Orenstein has created a unique and
truly enchanting way of reading Torah,
including the Hebrew with trope (cantillation),
the English translation sung in the
same melody, and her own creative commentary.
Services begin at 7:45pm in our
regular sanctuary location. Children are
always welcome in the service.*
Torah Study: On the Saturday following
the second Friday of the month, Makom
Ohr Shalom’s Community Torah Class
meets from 10am to noon at the Minkle
home: 19557 Calvert St., Tarzana, 91335.
Our Gabbai, Mike Melnick, leads the class
with deeply engaging commentary and
discussion.
Third Fridays: On the third Friday of each
month, we meet at our regular sanctuary
location, and services begin at 7:45pm.
Our Musical Shabbat Service includes
meditation and music with our clergy and
Makom’s musicians and singers. Children
are always welcome in the service.*
Fourth Fridays: On the fourth Friday of
each month, we hold an intimate Shabbat
experience with service and teaching from
8pm - 9:15pm, followed by Oneg and
dessert, at the home of Rabbi/Cantor
Monty and Melanie Turner: 2028 Barry,
Unit B, L.A., 90025.
.
Nursing Home Shabbat Services: Rabbi/Cantor Monty Turner leads volunteers
in bringing the joy of Shabbat to the
elderly and infirm. Join us at 2pm on the
third Saturday of each month at Sunbridge
Care Center, 1330 17th Street, Santa Monica
Final Shabbat Family Service: Rabbi
Debra Orenstein and soloist and teacher
Mitzi Schwarz lead a service geared for
families and kids at rotating homes, with
Oneg and art project following, on the last
Saturday of each month. Contact Judy Kollack at
818-758-6922 or Judybk@earthlink.net
*Childcare is provided with advance
reservations to Harold Gidish at
