A Unique Jewish Community
Makom Ohr Shalom services blend
Jewish tradition with creative,
contemporary forms of worship. We
are unique in many ways, praying
through meditation, chanting, and
singing soulful music. Members
participate out of genuine desire to
create a community that fosters
inner growth, spirituality, and
creativity. Makom has inspired
members to become cantors,
cantorial soloists, rabbis, composers of original music,
Torah scholars, and spiritual healers.
Our Shabbat Services
Together, on
Shabbat, we take
deep breaths, chant
shalom, and find
inner peace through
prayer and
meditation. We light
Shabbat candles.
We practice
gratitude and count our blessings, which is deeply rooted
in our tradition. We sing songs that open our hearts and
connect us with the Divine. We study Torah and use the
wisdom of our tradition to guide us in leading ethical
lives, healing our relationships and doing tikkun olam,
repairing our world. We honor our dead by saying
kaddish. Our prayer books include English, Hebrew, and
Transliterations. We pray in a way that invites both the
beginner and the more experienced to dive deeply into
personal prayer work.
We Welcome You
Makom is a community that welcomes beginners and
tzadiks alike; interfaith couples and families; singles;
families, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC. Our services are
egalitarian, and we value inclusivity.
A Feeling of Community
We encourage our members to participate by sharing
their talents, ideas, and skills to build programming and
community. We get to know each other by sharing ideas
during Torah study, schmoozing after services,
volunteering, and participating. Members are welcome to
audition to sing on our bima and join our Makom Ohr
Shalom Choir, which performs at High Holy Day services
and throughout the year. We are smaller than most shuls,
which allows for more intimacy and connection. Our
community often feels like a closely bonded havurah.
Our Mission Statement
Makom Ohr Shalom is a Jewish Renewal congregation
focusing on spiritual, mystical, meditative, and healing
traditions of Judaism. We seek to enhance and renew our
personal and collective relationship with HaShem through
joyful music, prayer, and Torah study, within a warm and
supportive community. We provide a loving home for
heart, spirit, and body.
